The Tallawang Solar Farm Project involves a proposal to develop renewable energy generation and will include the construction, operation and decommissioning of a solar farm with a Battery Energy Storage System and associated infrastructure including temporary workers accommodation. The Project is located in the Central West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) of NSW, near Gulgong. The total development footprint of the project is approximately 1,016 ha.
OUR INVOLVEMENT:
Umwelt were engaged to prepare the Scoping Report, Social Impact Assessment and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which involved:
- An assessment of the potential impacts of all phases of the Project, including cumulative impacts associated with other nearby projects
- Avoiding impacts including visual, cultural heritage and biodiversity
- Supporting and assisting the proponent through the stakeholder and community engagement process
- Identification of mitigation and management measures to reduce environment impacts on Biodiversity, Heritage (cultural and historical), Land resources, Visual, Noise and vibration, Transport, Water resources, Hazards and risks, Social and economic and Waste
- Detailed technical assessments including Biodiversity, Heritage (cultural and historical), Land resources, Noise and Vibration, Water resources, Hazards and risks (including bushfire), Community and stakeholder engagement and Social
- Spatial analysis
OUTCOME:
The assessment indicated that whilst there are impacts resulting from this development, these can be effectively managed, mitigated and offset. This project will deliver a range of long-term benefits to the state of NSW, ensuring cleaner and reliable energy generation, direct financial benefits to the local community and the creation of several hundred jobs during the construction phase. Importantly, the proponent is committed to best practice management and careful design measures, to ensure impacts are appropriately avoided or managed.
