Williamsdale Battery Energy Storage System

CLIENT: Eku Energy
SECTOR: Renewables
REGION: Williamsdale, ACT

The ACT Government is committed to achieving a net zero emissions future. To reach this goal, the Big Canberra Battery project will see a network of batteries constructed across the ACT. A key project within this network is the Williamsdale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which will be built and operated by Eku Energy.

The Williamsdale BESS will deliver a 250-megawatt (MW) / 500 megawatt-hour (MWh) energy storage system which will store enough renewable energy to power one-third of Canberra for two hours during peak demand periods. This project will assist in increasing energy security and reliability for Canberra’s residents.

OUR INVOLVEMENT:

Umwelt was engaged by Eku Energy to provide planning and approvals advice for the Williamsdale BESS. The team assessed ecological, heritage and physical constraints and sensitivities to guide the detailed design and placement of the BESS.

We prepared the Development Application package, including the following specialist studies:

  • Biodiversity assessment
  • Cultural heritage assessment, including test excavation program
  • Erosion and sediment control plan
  • Preliminary hazard assessment
  • Noise assessment

OUTCOME:

The Eku and Umwelt Project Team successfully received development approval in July 2024, and construction commenced in November 2024.
