Umwelt supports every aspect of closure and rehabilitation planning and implementation for each site. Our aim is to facilitate a smooth transition from existing operations to rehabilitation and closure, and/or alternate sustainable future uses.
Assistance is provided from conceptual planning at the project approval stage, through operational phase implementation with progressive rehabilitation and design, to decommissioning and closure at the end of your project’s life.
Experience and Expertise
Multiple clients in the coal, mineral sand, talc, salt, gold, metalliferous and iron ore mining industries have benefited from hands-on closure management. We also provide support and advice for a broad range of rehabilitation projects across government, infrastructure, and industry.
Umwelt assists clients with the development of conceptual plans, pre-feasibility plans, progressive rehabilitation and details closure plans, plus on-the-ground implementation of these plans.
We have in-house technical specialists who are experienced in providing support across all stages of closure, with proven capabilities in:
- Social impact assessment
- Stakeholder engagement
- Ecological assessments, rehabilitation and revegetation design and monitoring
- Restoration ecology services

- Mine water balance modelling and final void modelling
- Final Void Management Plans, with integrated groundwater, ecology and surface water inputs for development of technically robust ecohydrological models
- Final void modelling, including groundwater flow (MODFLOW-USG), particle tracking, transport modelling and salt balance modelling
- Groundwater assessment, including numerical modelling of groundwater conditions post closure
- Noise assessments
- Cultural heritage assessments
- Closure cost estimations
